Vernal Pools

What's Vernal Pool?

"Basically" it is a small and shallow basin of isolated water that cannot sustain a fish population.  Due to the seasonal flooding and drying out, they provide key breeding sites for a lot of our native amphibians.  Crustaceans, in/vertebrates, insects, reptiles, birds and even mammals depend upon the season cycle of these pools.

The key to a good vernal pool restoration is variability. Pools with varying hydrologic regimes can support very different populations. This can substantially increase site diversity. Hydrology is where it’s at. We are restoring pools at the Edison Woods site so that the depths, timing, and duration of the hydrology varies from pool to pool. As time permits, we will follow our vernal pool restoration at Edison Woods with regular updates and pictures.
