Wetlands incorporate a wide
range of saturated to inundated habitats. On the dry end of the
wetland spectrum are forest and wet prairie systems. The wet
prairie systems are very diverse habitats containing assemblages of
grasses, forbs, and sedges. The after picture on our home page
with the flowering forbs is such a system; Spartina will develop a more
dominant role as it matures. The picture below is directly
adjacent to it and is developing into an emergent marsh because of a longer hydroperiod; subsequently plants that can handle longer periods of
inundation/saturation (sedges) dominate. As the hydrology becomes
semi permanent to permanent, emergent and floating leaved plants become
dominant as shown below. The trees in the background of this
picture are on slightly higher ground and are only periodically
inundated in the spring. That area is developing into a wetland
forest. The trees are primarily Pin and Swamp White Oak, and Green
Ash. You can look thru our project photos and see many of the
wetland ecosystems found in Ohio.
