Native prairie is a rare treasure in today's landscapes. Prairie once covered nearly one-third of the continent but has been reduced to small, scattered remnants in the Midwest. These beautiful ecosystems provide food and shelter for many wild species, including butterflies and songbirds. Prairie plants also enrich soil, increase water absorption, and reduce run-off and flooding. Prairie plants have deep roots that allow them to survive even severe droughts. They require little or no fertilizer, sprays, or watering.
